A New Decade

A new decade and this new blog stand before us like a blank canvas. What will we paint on this landscape of human activities? If the past decade serves as a guide, we cannot accurately predict what colors, forms, or emotions will ultimately be conveyed. Who would have predicted that Y2K would be a dud? Think about all the money, effort, and time consumed with protecting data files. But was it really a complete waste of time? Along came September 11th, another unpredictable event. Perhaps some of those businesses or agencies that resided in the Twin Towers or the Pentagon breathed a sigh of relief because their files were backed up in a different location. The bottom line of this example challenges us to do what needs to be done based on the best information we have available to us at the time. We must take the initiative and be action oriented instead of merely waiting for events to occur and then reacting to them. The blank canvas beckons each of us to pick up our paint brushes and color in our canvas with vision, courage, and determination. Like Colonel Travis at the Alamo, we must draw a line in the sand and then we must step onto one side or another--action or passivity.
